Transportation Switchgear

TENMET products have been widely used in the transportation industry for many years. In addition to thair thermal and electrical properties TENMET composites have high ,echanical strength which is valuable in resisting the ardours of transportation applications. As in ordinary switchgear applications SINDANYO CS51 was often the industry standard used by money of the world's manufacturers of original equipment and by Railway and Metro authorities in UK, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Hong Kong, Australia, Spain, New Zealand, Japan, India etc.

TENMAT's range of non - asbestos, higher temperature composites has now gained wide acceptance in these critical applications.

British Rail has approved and used a GEC designed composite arc chute utilising non-asbestos SINDANYO L21, H61 and ARCLEX with DMC mouldings for use on the type 319 Thames Link EMU designed to work on 750 VDC ( 30,000A breaking load) or 25kVAC.

TENMET arc chute materials are working in applications up to 11kv/2000A AC and 3000V/1000A DC.

SNCF France uses non-asbestos SINDANYO L26 for arc chutes
constructed to Specification St 273 Cat 1.

For the only approved material. Its high performance characteristics in arc chute applications result in its use in such prestigious applications as the TGV high speed train . The Paris Metro authority, RATP, also employ REFRAVER S on their Metro lines.

Non-asbestos SINDANYO grades are also used by Metro and Tramway ARCLEX is used by Oslo tramways authorities as arc chutes. In Norway ARCLEX is used by Oslo tramways because of its high resistance to electric arcs and very low moisture absorption providing excellent electrical properties in humid atmospheres.

Power switchgear

Wherever high power electrical supplies need to be controlled then one of the favoured methods ia air break switchgear, where the high power electric arc produced in operating the switchgear is controlled and channelled safely by the arc chute. The arc produced in operating the switchgear can produce temperatures in excess of 200c.In order to resist these temperatures a high temperature resistant material must be employed. Electrical depending on the desing of the swotchgear. For cement based composites, water absorption can reduce electrical properties but where this could pose a problem are available.

For many years natural SINDANYO has been used for arc chutes. Its properties make it as ideal arc chute material and it is now vartually the industry standard. TENMET has developed non- asbestos grades of SINDANYO with equal arc resistance properties. Non-asbestos SINDANYO L21, L23, L26 and ARCLEX are excellent arc chute materials.

Also in power stations non-asbestos SINDANYO L21 has replaced asbestos-cement mouldings in the condtruction of 3.3 kV arc chutes.

At lower power levels the allen West Division of Simplex Electrical Ltd. has to replace an letterly natural SINDANYO as arc chutes in their CT/ZD contractors for motor control gear in steelworks etc.

FURNACE/FOUNDRY

For furnace applications a high strength insulation is required. The typical induction furnace has the mainframe clad in high temperature composite. Its duty is to provide secondary heat and electrical insulation.

The insulation must be able be able to withstand splashing by molten metal and the typical rough service of a working foundry. Natural SINDANYO has all the required properties to fulfil this role and has been widely employed for many years. Tenmet's new composites are now finding increasing acceptance.

FORGINGS/STAMPINGS

The most common method of heating both ferrous and non ferrous metals before forging or stamping is through induction heater boxes. This generally consists of an induction coil clad with an insulation material. The temperature of the billet is in the region of 1100c so the material needs to be capable of withstanding this temperature.Natural SINDANYO has been used extensively in the past but now non-asbestos SINDANYO has been approved by the leading manufacturers of induction heater boxes.

SMELTERS

Aluminium smelters make wide use of high temperature compisites.
SINDANYO asbestos grades have been used for dacades in many applications. Today, non-asbestos SINDANYO in the form of L23 is used is strip form between pot covers and cathode frames and in pad or palte form between the anide support, the control gear and the super structure. SINDANYO H61 is an ideal material for crust breaker discs and door frames. ARCLEX M provides the vecessary electrical insulation of the cathode frame on its concrete base and to insulate basbars from the steel retaining and cathode frames.
SINDANYO in its various forms offers the required machanical toughness and electrical insulation at the temperature

GLASS WORKS

Handling hot glass requires special care to prevent contact thermal shock with cold surfaces which can lead to strength reducing micro cracking of the glass. Natural Sindanyo has been widely used for pusher blocks, fingers, transfer rollers, lehr door insulation, dead plates etc. Non-asbestos SINDANYO H51, REFRAVER and ARCLEX are now being widely used in the glass container industry.

GENERAL Natural Sindanyo is still the pre-eminent material for insulation in the production of copper or aluminium clad cook ware internally. The temperature can rise to 750C in less than 2 minutes and under high pressue.

There are many other applications to which TENMET High Temperature Composites will prove ideally suited.
